Studies Introduction

In 1639, Ryukoku University was established as a seminary of Nishi Hongwanji Temple, for the purpose of educating young men in the Buddhist spirit. Since its establishment, we have been on the cutting-edge, aiming to maintain a world-class learning environment for academic, social, and spiritual excellence. Ryukoku University is over 370 years old, making it one of the oldest universities in Japan. Today, approximately 20,000 students from all over Japan and from many countries around the world study at Ryukoku University.

At present, we have nine academic Faculties and Graduate Schools in the fields of Literature, Economics, Business Administration, Law, Science and Technology, Sociology, International Studies, Policy Science, and Agriculture, as well as a Junior College and a Law School. We also have special programs like the privately-funded Japanese Culture and Language Program (JCLP) and the Japanese Experience Program in Kyoto (JEP Kyoto) for incoming exchange students from our Partner Universities. Such programs cater specifically to the needs of International Students.
