In 1639, Ryukoku University was established as a seminary of Hongwanji
Temple for the purpose of educating young men in the Buddhist spirit. Since
its establishment, the University has been on the cutting-edge, aiming
to maintain a world-class learning environment for academic, social and
spiritual excellence. The year 2009 will mark the 370th anniversary of
Ryukoku University, thus making it the one of the oldest universities in
Japan. Today, over 19,800 students from all over Japan and from many countries
around the world, study at Ryukoku University.
At present, we have 7 academic faculties and graduate schools for Literature,
Economics, Business Administration, Law, Science and Technology, Sociology,
and Intercultural Communication, a Junior College and also a Law School.
We also have special programs like the Japanese and Asian Studies and Japanese
Culture and Language Program which cater specifically to the needs of International
students.
